Brief 11: Secret 7

The Brief

To create an album cover for a selected song, using only imagery and not the title or lyrics of the song.

Deliverables

One album sleeve cover, 148mm by 148mm

Considerations

How the lyrics represent an image, how they can be used to represent the song

The song i have chosen is Born Slippy by Underworld. I have chosen this because it is the song i like the best and it straight away made me think about images and patterns which is a big help when it comes to creating something quickly.
Born Slippy, Underworld

I decided to look at the lyrics of the song to see what it actually said and if i could see if there was anything i could use.
The lyrics

Drive boy dog boy
Dirty numb angel boy
In the doorway boy
She was a lipstick boy
She was a beautiful boy
And tears boy
And all in your inner space boy
You had
hand girls boy
and steel boy
You had chemicals boy
I've grown so close to you
Boy and you just grown boy
She said come over come over
She smiled at you boy

Drive boy dog boy
Dirty numb angel boy
In the doorway boy
She was a lipstick boy
She was a beautiful boy
And tears boy
And all in your innerspace boy
You had
hand girls boy
and steel boy
You had chemicals boy
I've grown so close to you
Boy and you just grown boy
She said comeover comeover
She smiled at you boy

Let your feelings slip boy
But never your mask boy
Random blonde bio high density rhythm
Blonde boy blonde country blonde high density
You are my drug boy
You're real boy
Speak to me and boy dog
Dirty numb cracking boy
You get wet boy
Big big time boy
Acid bear boy
Babes and babes and babes and babes and babes
And remembering nothing boy
You like my tin horn boy and get
Wet like an angel
Derail

You got a velvet mouth
You're so succulent and beautiful
Shimmering and dirty
Wonderful and hot times
On your telephone line
And god and everything
On your telephone
And in walk an angel

And look at me your mom
Squatting pissed in a tube-
hole at Tottenham Court Road
I just come out of the ship
Talking to the most
Blonde I ever met
Shouting
Lager lager lager lager
Shouting
Lager lager lager lager
Shouting
Lager lager lager
Shouting
Lager lager lager
Shouting
Mega mega white thing
Mega mega white thing
Mega mega white thing
Mega mega
Shouting lager lager lager lager
Mega mega white thing
Mega mega white thing
So many things to see and do
In the tube hole true
Blonde going back to Romford
Mega mega mega going back to Romford
Hi mom are you having fun
And now are you on your way
To a new tension

headache

After reading the song lyrics i realised the song was extremely random, i then found the explanation that the artist gave when writing the song.

In the Guardian newspaper February 24, 2006, Karl Hyde said: "We used to go out drinking in Soho and I ended up in the Ship on Wardour Street. All the lyrics were written on that night. A drunk sees the world in fragments and I wanted to recreate that. I was inspired by Lou Reed's New York album and Sam Shepard's Motel Chronicles. I was into flash photography as well, so I was walking around Soho with a notebook and camera, just observing things. In those days I'd open the book whenever a musical idea inspired me. Rick [Smith] came up with a rhythm and I started singing over it. The vocals were done in one take. When I lost my place, I'd repeat the same line; that's why it goes, 'lager, lager, lager, lager.' The first time we played it live, people raised their lager cans and I was horrified because I was still deep into alcoholism. It was never meant to be a drinking anthem; it was a cry for help. Now I don't mind. Why Born Slippy? It was a greyhound we won money on."

After reading this it gave me more of an idea about the song and so i started to come up with some ideas that i think could work for it.

From listening to the song i firstly though about being out and getting drunk, this brought to mind things like drugs, drinks, lights. And taking into account the explanation of the song and what he was going through brought to mind the thought that going out and drinking made him feel free, this feeling of being free is what a lot of people who have an addiction use it for, to be free.

Listening to the song made me think about waves and it sounded a bit hypnotic to start of with, this then lead me to think abut distortion would then relate well to drink and the distortion that occurs when drunk.

The Concept

The concept behind my idea is to create something that shows how the drink in the artists life was an addiction, and how drinking helped him to feel free from the rest of the world. This will be represented then through the distortion of an image to show waves or something that makes the images look different to what its original state was. This shows then that the drink changes the person.
