Brief 3: OUGD603 Ditto, Ben Freeman Brief

Today we had are first session with ditto, who explained to us where he came from and how his studio came about being what it is. He showed us what he was interested in things like rock music and rave and how these have influenced his work and how he goes about researching things.

Work examples

We were then given a brief by Ben which was called The Method.

Your task is to develop your own research methodology and find a way to communicate that. It could take the form of a meta project, or it could be more pragmatic and grounded in reality.

The important thing to develop in this project is a clear and defined way of looking at the world, filtering it and editing what you find to fit your interests and working practice.

Most succesful designers have a finely honed methodologie and this is your chance to really explore your own.

IMPORTANT: This project is not about producing pretty things. We don't care what is looks like, only how well considered and useful it is.

Methodology is the systematic, theoretical analysis of the methods applied to a field of study. It comprises the theoretical analysis of the body of methods and principles associated with a branch of knowledge. Typically, it encompasses concepts such as paradigm, theoretical model, phases and quantitative or qualitative techniques.

After been given this we were asked to come up with our own methodology, or to write down what we did now and how that could be changed or adapted to a much better more engaging methodology that we would be able to gain a better understanding of our subject matter.

SO to start i wrote down the methods i undertake on a brief.

  • Dissect the brief picking out key points and the most relevant parts
  • Brainstorm,
  • Ask people about the topic, questionnaires
  • Image search, books, internet
  • Immerse myself in the subject matter
  • Take images of that subject matter
  • Crit ideas with my peers and also with the target audience

After everyone was very confused all day at what Ben had been trying to tell us we gathered as a group to have a talk with him, he then explained to us what he was trying to get across throughout the day using the things we had written down.

So somebody gave an example of what they did throughout there process of there brief and this was very similar to what everybody else did. Ben told us to forget all this and come up with our own method of research, something that we can use on all our briefs, a method that is innovative and different, something that isn't as simple as looking on google and in books but also something that works well for us that gets our brain thinking about original ideas.

An example he gave us was that he did work for Alexander McQueen, and in there/his studio they had a huge wall and everyone who worked there placed images, pattern pieces, fabric samples on this wall and just by looking at the wall you could get a feel of what the whole clothing line was going to look like. This was a kind of methodology that is different and works for them.

I think what Ben was saying was very interesting but also very confusing. There was a lot of contradiction on his part that made the day very confusing, like we thought a different methodology would be applied to what we we researching like different research methods would be done from something about a children's book to a wine bar, Ben disagreed to this and said there should be the same methodology for all projects. But later in the day when he was giving examples he said he used different methodologies for different briefs, all very confusing.

All in all i found the day interesting and it did make me think about how i go about researching and how i might do it differently and how that different method could work really well for me and help me to create much stronger work.
