Brief 7: OUGD603 Alec Dudson Intern magazine brief

Today we had a workshop by Alec Dudson from Intern magazine, he gave us a talk about where he came from and his magazine that he has created. Intern Magazine is a new, bi-annual independent print publication concerned with internships in the creative industries.

'The magazine has two main aims. The first is to provide a tactile showcase for the precocious talent currently working in these fields unpaid and as interns. Secondly, we are initiating a long overdue and frank debate about the current state of the intern culture, and its potential implications in both the short and long term for the creative industries.

The intention is to empower interns through both facets of the publication. Drawing industry attention to the work of those we feature and existing as a useful resource to those currently involved in or on the precipice of internships are our means of doing so. In order to be effective on any level, intern magazine needs to be accessible; this is reflected in the mix of features that we present, ranging from serious debate to casual observation.

While the creative industries are the focal point of the publication, this is not to suggest that unpaid internships are somehow endemic to them. Far from it. We see these industries as a fascinating case study and our starting point for the debate. If you are at all compelled by the culture of unpaid work then you will find something of interest in our pages.'

Selecting a name

Our group idea

Ideas

  1. One idea was to have a family sat down about to watch a film, they cant decide on a film but they like a certain director, the dad would then say, 'oh i have an idea, why not have a look at SEED magazines', the camera would then span over to the shelf where SEED magazines would be and they selected the edition of the director they wanted to see and had a look through at the films.
  2. Another idea was to have a guy who is sat in his armchair at home and he is reading a SEED magazine, he is then transported to the directors armchair directing a film.

Evaluation

This brief i feel was really strong from our group seeing as we only had a day to complete it all and we came up with a strong concept that could actually be produced because there isn't really anything like it out there and so is something that we might carry on with after the session. This session has helped me to produce work fast because of the time limit but also helped me to work in a group. I also really enjoyed working with magazines and creating one and i feel it is something i am really interested in terms of that sector of graphic design.
