Previous Yearbooks
As a group we decided to look back at older yearbooks to see what they were like and what we could do that was different to what they had produced. The examples we were given form photography were both of a square format, which is i guess because that can cope with various formats and image sizes, but this produced a layout that was a bit all over the place.
The name of this years photography book was unseen, they had a blind embossed cover on the front with a printed seen on the back.
I think these publications are very simple and very boring, we want to produce something different to these. One thing that is important and has been made clear by photography and by looking at these books is the type of paper we use, with photographs looking better sometimes on a gloss stock and some on a matt stock, so this is something we might have to think about, we could maybe have 2 different kinds of stock in the out publication
One thing is clear that we will receive high quality images from photography and this is something we wont have to worry about, but if we had done another yearbook this could well have been a problem.
The name of this yearbook below is infinity, thinking of a name is something that i think will be important to our yearbook, because it might have a baring on what we produce . I think this image works well for the front of this photography book and it ties in nicely with the image.
Again the images in the book are of differing sizes, which is i'm guessing because cropping an image is a no go so they remain the size they come.
As a group we discussed using coptic sitch for the binding method because the book could then lie flat and if images went across a double page it could be play flat and the whole image could be seen
As can be seen here the image goes across a double page but it still can be seen well because of the binding, we think having the booked coptic switched is a really good idea and a concept we might run with, and something i think i will take along to the next meeting with photography
This book also has glossy paper which i think works really well with photographs especially the ones in this book, but i don't think we can decide what paper to use in our yearbook till we get all the images.
Having this coptic switched book will also allows us to have different sections, which would then allow us to use different socks though the book quite easily
Northumbria University prospectus
This publication i am showing purely because of the aesthetic which i really like, the half pages work well, and we could use these for quotes form students of maybe visiting professionals, although i don't think we could use these to put images on because as can be seen it would crop the image.
Again i really like the aesthetic of this book, in particular the front cover has a smooth texture that to touch is kind of like a felted paper which i really like, we could maybe use this on the our yearbook but maybe it wont be appropriate.
