The Brief
To create a yearbook for the BA Graphic Design.
Considerations
We have to consider what has been done before and the ways in which we can make it different to what they have done.
How we are going to represent everybody in the class
How we are going represent everybody as an individual
The layouts of the pages and how the information inside is displayed
These were things that i thought about which i then relayed back to the group. After this we then started to as a group discuss different concepts and outcomes we might be able to create.
So as a group we stripped it back to basics to try and come up with an innovative concept and something that could work well for the group as a whole.
We discussed the content of the yearbook and things that we felt would be important to have in it, such as image of everyones work, the achievements, contact details and areas of interest. But then also other things we thought about are how we want to get everyones personality across, so maybe personal questions that we could ask everyone about.
Thinking along them lines of personality of the group we started to discuss what we were like as a year because we felt that was very important to get across because of last years book where we felt it was boring and didn't give across anything personal about each individual or even about the year group as a whole.
Concept 1
Thinking along those lines again Pri thought about using where each person was geographically, like i am from the midlands joe is from the south and sam is form the north, using dots to represent each person would create an interesting visual aesthetic for the yearbook and the cover, this could then be used at the show with each person being represented by a dot that could be next to there names/work.
Concept 2
The next idea we had was thinking about the year which is 2015 and then the number of students in the class which is 51, from this we started to think about reflection, and how maybe the yearbook could be a reflection on the year. using this concept we could think about different stocks of paper and maybe there could be a reflective surface at the show somewhere.
Concept 3
The final concept we thought about was using peoples hand writing, we think this would create something that we thought was very personal, something the yearbooks before were lacking. There is nothing more personal than somebody's handwriting. This idea came from me thinking about sentences that we could create and people could fill in themselves, such as, my name is ……. and i like ………, this came from something i used to do when i was younger, the game where a sentence was written and then the paper is folded and another sentence is written, each sentence written is personal to that person but when the whole sentence/paragraph is finished it would form a groups personality, this would create a strong concept for the group and individuals. This lead us to the hand written element of the concept and we started to think about how this could be applied in a book and towards the show.
From this we selected concept 3 because we thought this had most scope and it also offered the most amount of personality.
