Brief 12 Photography Yearbook - meeting with evolution print

Today we met with the printers who would be binding out book, Evolution print. Jason who works there came to chat to us about what could be done and what couldn't and to answer any questions we might have.

some key points that we took away from this as a group were:
  • They can do coptic stitching, but it is obviously more expensive than perfect bound.
  • Minimum of 300 books for litho printing. Litho is much better quality but start up costs are expensive. It is also cheaper in the long run.
  • To get an idea of price book from last year, uncoated 300gsm cover, 120gsm pages (96 of them) x 500 was £3000.
  • B sizes are also printable.
  • Printing 64 or 96 pages is cheaper than others due to number of sheets used.
  • Can print up to B1 size.
  • We mentioned as we might have photographs across both pages, a coptic bound book may work well. As we would not lose any of the image once bound, unlike a perfect bound book.
  • However Jason mentioned we should think about quantity and budget. Think about the commercial aspects of the project. What might be a great idea might not work. As they are commercial booklets.
  • Digital you pay for every sheets, Litho you pay for a make ready.

Another key point that Jason told us was that usually jobs take 2 weeks to turn around, so we would have to have our book ready to print 2 weeks before the show. This is a deadline we can then feedback to Photography.

It was really good to speak to Jason today because we found out what was possible and what we could and couldn't do. It also gave us an insight into how things are printed and ways in which we could maybe save some money. Also form this meeting i think we have discovered that maybe doing a coptic stitched book would be too expensive and maybe we should look at doing something else
