In this session we presented to Ben our methodology and how we could use it applied to a brief.
I presented what i had and that was, to take go to the place i was doing a brief for and get involved and immersed within it, last session he asked me a question about who would i do that with a sweet shop, so i used a sweet shop as an example to apply this to. I said i would go to the sweet shop, try the sweets ask question and take a lot of pictures, using these pictures i would then create a reference book that i could make notes on. With different briefs i would then build a collection of different reference books that i can refer back to for inspiration on other projects.
Feedback on this
Ben said that this idea wasn't any different and cant be applied to every brief and the results would be uninteresting.
He didn't say much else on the idea and instead asked questions about ways in which we thought a methodology could be produced.
Evaluation
His feedback comes back to the point i made from the previous session we had with him when he said he applies different methodologies to different briefs, so I thought for this session I had created something that could work for all briefs, but Ben didn't think it did, but that wouldn't matter if the idea was to have different methodologies for each brief.
Although I respect the way in which Ben Freeman went about some of his work and how he shows a different part of society with the way in which he interviews them or spend a lot of time with them to get to them really well for a brief, and this has produced some work which is really interesting and thought provoking, I feel he clearly has some very strong views on a lot of things, i.e in the first session he said in a general sweeping comment to the class that a book/methodology on football, or sport is boring and nobody wants to see that, but again i feel that is clearly just his own strong opinion on the world and his interests, i could quite easily have turned around and said who wants to see a book on teenage mutant ninja porn? But again that is just my opinion, I cant help feel he just confused me more than helped in terms of having a methodology. He did however make me think about a methodology which is I suppose the point in these sessions.
